Made in NYC: Some NYC Resources

First let me start out with a link to MovieMaker's article about the ten best cities to make movies in, NYC being the #1 city for the past three years, beating out Austin and all the other film havens in the U.S., even for independent filmmaking.

Top 10 Cities for MovieMakers (2007)

This article explains some of it's reasons, of course, being state & city resources & incentives & a strong independent filmmaking spirit as opposed to L.A. which has not even showed up on MovieMaker's list for a while, no doubt to the domineering control that Hollywood has had over the local industry there.

here are a few more resources, of course animation job links are located in another post as I get them...

I guess I won't be too offended that no one cares about L.A. anymore...guess the smog ruined the image. Good info, though! Yay for accidental networking. :)

yeah! :) im sure the 'smog' is really bad there too. But i really dont hear much industry criticism about it. although whats known as 'the hollywood formula of filmmaking' not to mention too much industry control over producers & agents has provided countless 'campfire stories' filled with horror. Yes sadly these situations have stifled creativity and a new flux of artistry into LA at least since the 80's. It makes it difficult for anyone to come in & offer new, better ideas. I think really though this serves as a great deterrent to any talented creative prospective filmmakers from moving to LA as the hollywood influence & control is felt worldwide. Not as a creative source of inspiration, but as a tightly controlled business (maybe a dirty one- if thats what you are saying-) it has in the end proven ineffective to bring in the bucks at the box office or make us wish for more.

I have to say- from my own perspective- its just not cool or attractive to watch these poor kids who go to hollywood turn into boosers & druggies- then its broadcasted & written about so we can watch them disintegrate into the depths of despair like Ms. Spears or Ms. Lohan have. Its just sad & disgusting to watch at all & it permeates all media. I really can't wait for it to change into something more inspiring to watch.

Update: Since posting this I have learned more about LA and the "runaway" productions that instead go to NOLA, ATL, NYC and other places open to incentives and less regulations.

Regulations can be alright if financially the state can offer some benefit to moving their production there that outweighs any such inconvenience. These are more government issues rather than Hollywood 'culture' or the business environment there. I stand corrected for my past perspective on Hollywood culture.

So I support less regulation and more 'creative' incentives which might attract filmmakers to your state.
